Well the problem is chicken or egg: do teenagers put in juvenile detention centers get there because they have a mental disorder? or do they acquire a mental disorder by being there? i am not sure that pathologizing them is the answer since it adds mental patient to their resume of criminal—TWO stigmas for them to fight. I'm not denying the reality of mental illness… obviously many teens have it. But giving 2/3 of delinquents that label obviously doesn't help. Especially if the solution is just going to be making them eligible for a dope pill. Was this answer helpful?
