Sick At Heart

This woman started showing up quite recently. Will greet you very politely, will smile to you each time. Small, skinny, wearing an ankle long black fur coat. I would reckon her about sixty, a retired person, that is. She will walk alone, but not quite alone – she always has a doggy with her, a smallish black bitch, of a shaggy kind. The doggy will snarl now and then for no reason at all. The owner will soothe the doggy, sometimes pick it up to hold in her arms. The dog is old, with some long white hairs showing along its spine.

Every day, in the morning and then in the evening, I will meet them both, and each time the owner will greet me very politely – “How-are-you!”, and the doggy will yelp couple of times, but it won’t snarl at me, will look at me with interest. I don’t mind them living about. A lonely woman of Slavic aspect can’t be much harm, even if having a dog. Yet our house is a regular public thoroughfare nowadays, it’s not like what it used to be at all. And now they are promising a lunar eclipse to top it off. An eclipse of our own, if you please, much we need it. My shadow getting on the moon! Without my consent! No, I don’t fear it at all – but the very notion is disgusting. Or maybe it’s me having the jitters after all, I really can’t say…

Our house is called “the stump”, it has five stories. The construction was begun of a 12 story tower, but they ran out of material. At first there was plenty of brick stored all over the courtyard. There was a high hoarding around the construction site, but you could see through slits. I lived near by at that time, was renting an apartment. And every day I would pass this construction site, I was promised a flat of my own in this house as an employee. I used to be a notable expert in my field. And then they wouldn’t want me any more. And who is wanted nowadays? Thieves and bandits are wanted, that’s who… Now what was it I was talking about?…

Oh yes, I would pass that construction site hoarding daily. The slits were wide, you needn’t even look into them actually, if you walked fast enough, the effect was cinematic. One morning I was going by, and what did I see out of the corner of my eye  – the courtyard was empty! I stopped dead, flung myself upon that slit. Only two small piles left, wouldn’t be enough even for one story. Nobody ever became wise as to what had happened, but the authorities speedily passed the resolution to build not the tower, but our stump. The gossip was it was the local bosses feathering their nests – that they had had the brick moved to the neighboring town and sold it there. But I was lucky, the flat I was to have was on the third floor. As for the rest, those to have anything higher than the fifth floor, they got a lot of fussing about, and explanations… They topped the house out in record time, had the residents move in, the lucky ones that is, and since then twenty years passed. Each story has eight flats, and there is one service flat that has no number, which makes it thirty nine of them all in all. The last one is flat thirty nine, that I know for sure. A woman lived in that flat, I used to visit her often. I even considered marrying her, but she was the first to think better of it. Her grown up daughter moved in with her, and we stopped seeing each other. I didn’t take it hard, with age your interests change. I went for stamp collecting, and she is now planting bushes in front of the house. Sometimes I spot her down there, digging about under the windows. I have a look at her, and turn away, I have had so many like her… And to each I would sing – “you used to be with another man, and now you are lying with me…” It’s a song, you know, the song goes like this. But women don’t know first thing about understanding jokes. I used to be married, two or three times, ages ago in times immemorial. I’m about to turn seventy, I’m lucky to be among the quick. And capable of walking on my own to the local store. I don’t need anybody’s company, but it would be hard to do without that store. There is only one kind of beverage I will take in, and that’s firewater. There used to be an old woman in the house opposite ours who distilled hooch at home, which facilitated things greatly, but she passed away not long ago. Her daughter refused to continue in the trade, a crowd gathered to plead with her… But no, she wouldn’t, and that was that, and then she crashed the coil-pipe of the still against the floor! I was tearing like mad at what was left of my hair… Women – they are that untrustworthy, you just can’t trust a woman. Especially if you are my age. I know all their tricks, “I will be of heeelp”, and the next thing you know, she owns the flat, and all the property too… They are hard sellers of unwanted services, that’s what they are. And then you are left with the only option, to get dispatched as soon as possible. People used to talk a lot about THE OTHER world, but who would believe these tall tales in our days? It makes a man take care… I know where they will push me into, so I am in no hurry to depart. We are not wanted, none of us, both in this world, and the other one. Considering the other one is made after the image of this one. Just kidding. Besides, my attitudes towards the second sex became special now. Though if you don’t give in, they won’t hurt you. And if a really insolent one happens to come my way, I have her dismissed promptly. I never curse, just say quietly and clearly “Begone, you sly cheat, I know everything in advance…” They instantly make themselves scares. But this one is offering nothing, just smiling. The bitch is turning gray, the gray locks over the spine dangle. The bitch won’t snarl at me, though it does show its teeth from time to time, as if it were smiling too.

So every day we do the routine thing – how are you, how is the weather today, how is your doggy…

Everything was OK till last Friday, there were walks, there were talks, I was living a life of dissipation… And last Friday it hit me and I felt sick at heart. That’s boozing up away from home for you… there is hardly anything half that bad. It was all that eclipse’s working… A week to that eclipse still to go, and yet it was like a nail sticking inside your boot. Kolya, a neighbor of mine, said that lately I was having too much booze… Imagine him telling a thing like this to me! Though maybe I indeed was having a bit too much of it?.. Well, on Friday I was returning home and suffered a foot injury. I tread on my own foot. With one of my feet I tread on the other of my feet. It hurt like nothing, but I couldn’t do a thing about it, one of my feet just wouldn’t get off the other of my feet. Of course I was under the influence, but I have quite a history of booze taking, and nothing like this ever happened!… Never ever have I had one of my feet pin the other one down. Effectively blocking all my attempts to move in whatever direction…

That’s boozing up away from home for you… Since youth I, having had however much, would head for home, and make it. No lying in the street for me, the kind of the upbringing I got forbids it. Basically I am from a good family, and but for having a streak of some beastly bad luck thereupon… Well, that Friday… I was walking on like any other man, and suddenly I am stopped short. And it’s evening, it’s December, it had grown dark hours ago, but I have to stand still as if rooted to the spot. And I am sick at heart, and it is biting cold… And that blighter of an eclipse is devastating my morale. It was that eclipse behind the whole thing, mark my words. And the old woman too…

The cold is getting the better of me little by little. The upper foot is like glued, it is sitting upon the lower foot like it is the right and proper way for feet to behave… And I am standing like rooted. Deep in thought. There still is a week to go till this eclipse. Nobody is afraid of it, but I can’t help being a bit scared. That’s why I drink so hard. Even Kolya, that old sot, says – “lately you are taking a bit too much…” I am overdoing it because I am sick at heart. I am right here, safely anchored to my dog-cart of life… and my shadow is flying across the expanses of the eternal cold, to make a stop at the moon. But it’s me who’s casting this shadow. And just think where I am casting it to! Besides, is it to resume its flight across the void space afterwards? Or is it to fly back here?..

I am sick at heart… I am standing rooted to the spot…
And I see that old woman moving from our house towards me, and her bitch is running by her side. It always keeps to the woman’s side, never goes in front of her, or behind her. The sole companion of a lonely woman, the only joy of her life. I can’t stand dogs, but I do envy them, that cannot be denied. They get their meals free, and they can’t care less about the fire water.

The old woman has approached, and is standing by watching me. For some reason she has omitted that how-are-you routine of hers, just keeps smiling. That smile gives me creeps. Let her smile as much as she chooses when my feet are free, so that I can make use of them, and run away. But I am having these feet of mine like glued to each other, and I cannot move an inch. And the doggy is also standing still. Both of them are looking at me with the same expression, as they knew me for ages. And I am standing as if rooted to the spot. And I can’t utter a word, I don’t know how to explain the situation. Should I say that I have one of my feet glued to another?  I am at my wits ends.

“Do you recognize me?” the woman asks me at last.

She is tiny as compared to me, but she is wearing a high fur hat, and the slippers that peek from under the skirt of her long, long fur coat, are high heels.

Who would go out in high heels in cold weather like this?

And she never before had high heels on. She used to wear soft and warm woolen footwear, the kind that’s nicknamed “old age is not much fun”. I can’t swear I render the title right, but the footwear was surely warm. And my own feet seem to be whisked away, I don’t feel them at all now… Well, I keep silent and stare at the pair of them. Something is wrong with the old woman’s length of the body. When she was approaching me, she was of normal length. Though not tall, but sure to have her legs about. And now by my estimate – she can’t have any legs at all, except for the high heels. There is no room for any legs if nothing is very wrong with her body. If her body is normal, that is, even if small. The legs must have gone somewhere, there are only the high heels showing beneath the hem of the fur-coat…

We both maintain silence. And the doggy is silent too, just showing its teeth.

“Do you know me now?” and the old woman also showed her teeth. Her teeth are long, her gums bright red. What might she want from me, that defies me. And her manner of address became that of familiarity, what could be the meaning of such a shift. I detest familiarity, and normally would put an end to it at once. But here we have a very special case, me being unable to unglue one of my feet from the other of my feet. So I stay silent.

Yet eventually I did ask her – “I sadly fail to recall what flat you might be from?”

“From the fortieth,” answers she. “Mathew, I am your ex wife, can’t you see for yourself?”

I have already mentioned, I have had more of them ex-ones than I can possibly count… And to each I would sing – “you are to become my wife…” Well, one has to have understanding enough to see a joke for what it is…

“You and your doggy have moved in recently, haven’t you?” say I to escape the treacherous grounds.

“What doggy…” she smiles, “that’s your daughter, Mathew.”

A daughter, really… I don’t remember having had any daughters…

“Never had any daughters,” say I, “you’ve got something muddling wrong, you have…”

In my distress I myself shifted to a somewhat familiar tone. I don’t remember ever having a wife like that, do what you like! Never had that short a dame, I used to like them lengthy and of large dimensions…

“I have grown thin,” says she.

And have shortened remarkably, think I. A dame like that… I never had a dame like that in my life. And that… daughter… the bitch of a daughter… she is prematurely aged into the bargain.

The bitch must have guessed my thoughts, took offence, and started to wail in a thin high voice, like a baby crying. Caught the trouser leg of my upper foot with its teeth, and began chewing. Getting closer and closer to my very flesh. But I was glad it was, hoping that pain might goad my legs into moving, and then I would be able to run away from them, I don’t want any ex wives about. And I certainly can do without any weird daughters.

The doggy is chewing on and on – but it doesn’t want to snap at the upper one, it is making its way to the beneath one. And at last it bit into my ankle.

The pain? I had been bitten by large dogs, with pieces of flesh torn clean out, with blood streaming… me vaulting over fences… That pain was acute, but though strong, not at all scary. And this one was different, the whole of my leg started to ache, from the very division point to the ground – it was aching on and on, stronger and stronger. It was an unbearable and unremitting ache, it was the heart sickness getting the grip of my leg, about to pull me under the ground…

The bitch at last let go of me, but the ache persisted. It bent me to the ground, my face coming close to my knees. And I was falling, at last I was free – falling…

I came up to my senses – it’s stuffy, pitch-dark, hot, I am covered with a coverlet that weighs a ton, and somewhere nearby a couple of guys are groaning, wheezing…

It turned out I was in the hospital. Three toes of my beneath foot were gone, had to be cut off. Were frost-bitten to the very core, and doomed never to live again on that limb of mine.

“Strongly advise you to give up that smoking-drinking habit,” said the surgeon, “or it might come to having to cut it even shorter.”

In a week they dismissed me from the hospital, I hobbled back home, got to bed, fell asleep, woke up in the morning to see that there was nothing interesting going on at home. So I headed for that local store…

I was walking to the store and trying to figure it out, how come we are having that flat number forty at our house…

On the way I met Kolyan, enquired about that old woman. But he proved completely unawares, never saw her.

“And what about the doggy that was the daughter, I couldn’t have dreamed her up too, could I?…”

He laughed, you are out of your mind, what bitch of a daughter, what are you talking about…

I came back home, had my booze all by myself, went to bed. In my dream I saw the old woman, but without the doggy.

I asked her where the daughter was, but she was silent, only moved her head slowly from side to side, to the right, to the left…

“Mathew, how long are you going to make me wait for you?…”

“And where are you?…”

“Where do you think?… I am on the moon.”

I woke up. I was sick at heart. And suddenly I remembered – it’s today that I am to be on the moon!..

I went to the window, and I was just in time – a shadow was crawling upon the moon from the left.

I was casting that shadow.

What kind of life it is when you have your shadow flying about on its own…

So I stayed standing there till I crawled off the moon and continued my flight…

I was sick at heart…
