The Day Is Over
Fragments from the novel “Vis Vitalis”
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Before retiring for the night Arcady timidly, with his questions ready to hand, approached the foreign apparatus. Which, grinning crookedly with its slot of a mouth, spat out a yellowish square of thick paper. The scientist grabbed for it with his hands shaking, brought it closer to the lamp… What a rascal of a device! It finds the data insufficient, if you please, the mischievous hardware! Where am I supposed to get more data… And he vindictively switched it off, cutting down the power supply to the minimum, barely enough to maintain a glimmer of life inside the haughty pedant with its flat refusals, to teach him a lesson about being snobbish, about being mean!
Anxieties about the potato bargain, worrisome thoughts, this setback in his quest for the truth proved too much for Arcady, and he decided to have some rest that night. He sat down into his favorite arm-chair, picked up the book he had been reading his whole life – “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, opened it at random… But he hit upon the nasty story – the chemist dissolving the body of the murdered artist in acid. That noisome chemistry! But you can’t do a thing without it, damn it…
What was it in that book that attracted him so greatly, might it be the beauty and precision of the language? Or the witty aphorisms? No, the artistic aspect didn’t concern him at all: he bit into the meaning with such fierceness that all the rest was beyond notice for him. Where meaning seemed to him vague he suspected drug addiction – mind put to sleep. Everything was much easier for him with other books – he read them and put them away, having formed clear ideas as to what was good and what was bad in them, and why the main character seemed so attractive. But here, however hard he tried, he couldn’t understand why this idle talk, empty, superficial, held him spellbound?… And when he couldn’t understand something he would go on struggling to the bitter end.
Arcady read a page and fell asleep – sitting in his arm-chair, with his neck awkwardly bent, and he slept like this till three, then, cursing and damning, with his body numb and his feet icy, he moved over to his bunk, pulled off some of his clothes, and went still under his plaid blanket.

That night Mark dreamt a dream. He is approaching the house, and his mother meets him, hugs him… he feels how light, how dry she is, nothing but bones is left of her… They fall into animated conversation, as usual, starting on politics, on Stalin… “If Father only knew!..” Then they move to everyday matters, and at once an argument begins: you have no achievements to show, you keep dwelling within yourself… he feels slackness creep in, attempts to joke, she persists in her attacks – “look at the life around you with your eyes open, they will crush you and never even look back to see what happened to you, just like they had crushed us!..” He doesn’t want to hear it, there are so many interesting things ahead – ideas, books, I’ll do somehow… She waves her hand – the spit and image of your father, he was a “do somehow” man too! Not much of a son you turned out to be, lacking in pushiness, lacking in force… He is silent, thinking – I yet will prove…
He wakes up, everything is quiet around, he is in some home unfamiliar to him – a big room, the parquet wilderness, moonlight. For some reason it seems to him – they are standing there without the door. He tip-toes to the icy hall, the gusts of wind are swishing in through the cracks, there is snow on the floor. He bends over, and sees: in the key-hole there is an eye! Sure enough, they have tracked him down. He noiselessly moves to the window – they are standing outside there too. The purposefulness shows through in their faces, hidden deep inside the raised collars, the inevitability marks the sharp, pointed noses, the bloodless thin lips… They have come for the Jews! How they got wise to? Idiot, you showed your papers at the Personnel, didn’t you? He pulls on the trousers, grabs the tiny suitcase he had arrived with… what else? He forgot about the leaf! He picks up the leaf, hides it in his bosom, it is fragile, prickly, but quick to understand, and doesn’t struggle. Now to the balcony, and with all the might – upwards! The peculiar feeling in the pit of the stomach told him that he would fly…
And suddenly, on the very edge, he froze horrified – but what about Arcady? But is he… I don’t know. But his patronymic is Lvovich! Pushkin’s uncle also had Lvovich for his patronymic. To go downstairs? The eye won’t let him pass. Besides, it will be for nothing – the old man will wake up, and mock him as usual, will say – “I don’t need to, I am of another kind. You flee, I won’t, I am different, they think me one of them.” No, he won’t say it, it can’t be… He felt that he was absolutely alone.
His heart desperately went tolling a bell – and woke him up.
..
When night was drawing close towards morning Arcady also dreamt a dream. He is traveling in a special kind of a carriage, a second class carriage, of German manufacture, that started to crop up recently and surprise with comforts they offer – napkins, and personal lamp… But he knows that all around him are the… well, the convicts, and we are traveling along that very fixed route, though with the appearances maintained. With comfort, but to the same destination. The third, luggage, shelf is occupied by some hoodlums, the criminal element frolicking. Next to Arcady is a woman, a very nice woman, he looks at her – she resembles the one, there was once one… They start talking about something, and seem to be recognizing each other, by some small details, by gestures… He is afraid that behind any new word a revelation might be lurking that it is a mistake, that it is not she at all, and with some inner drive he prompts her what to say. No, not exactly prompts, but he sort of knows in advance what she is about to say. She smiles, says everything that he wants to hear… he is pleased, and at the same time miserable – suspects that all this is actually his own contrivances – all her words!.. and still gladness overwhelms: each answer excites him so greatly that he forgets his doubts, and doesn’t care to know wherefrom everything comes, and who is at the other end of that thread…
“Arik!”
That he couldn’t have anticipated – he had forgotten how she used to call him, and remembered only now. He has no doubts any more – it is she! He found her again, and this time it is for good.
She is hailed by those from the luggage shelf, in language peculiar to that kind of people. He jumps up, prepared to fight, he used to be tough, could stand against several attackers. Well, for a minute, and what next?.. No way out, they are to shower down any moment from that luggage shelf above… the cursing, the gleam of the jail-made knives…
But no, from above came down, hung by a string, sausage, a piece of Moscovskaya sausage, dry and smoked, hell, haven’t seen anything like it for years. And now she… is slowly turning away from him… slow motion footage… her hand is reaching for the sausage. The hand goes grasped in a tight grasp, and she herself is instantly hoisted up there to the luggage shelf, there is some great excitement up there, hustle and bustle, no protests, no crying out in indignation, not even an exclamation follows…
He grabs his shabby jacket and rushes out of the carriage. Nobody prevents him any – do as you please! He goes into the vestibule, the wheels thunder, the land below is rushing away, black, escaping from under your feet, fleeing, flying…
He woke up – his heart was throbbing, that’s why the land was rushing away that fast, slipping from under his feet. With habitual movement he fumbled for the medicine bottle, and dropped some into the leftovers in the tea cup – measuring the dose by the sound, it was so quiet that he counted all the drops, gulped the mixture, and only then felt that he was swimming in sweat. He stretched out on his bunk and just lied still – without thinking.
