We Go To Visit Mom
At last we went to visit her. It is a ten minutes ride on the suburban train, said Dad, but before one has to go by the streetcar for quite a time, to the end of the line, first there were big houses, then a dull long street with small wooden houses.
I asked Dad, are we already in the country?
It is an old district of the city, soon we will reach the small station of the suburban railway, electric trains run here now. Once we used to go to the country house from this station, before the War. The sea, huge boulders, we bathed there. I had a car, but we liked to go by train.
What happened to the car?
He laughed, I wouldn’t know, I left it in front of the house, and when we came back, the house itself was no more, so we headed for uncle Ber’s place, don’t you remember?
Of course I remembered. I even felt belittled by the question, only two years passed since.
It was a very long ride, in the morning it is neither dark, nor light, the day is gray, only the snow lends some light to the street, to the little houses, little fences, the leafless trees and low pines, they grow in little groves here and there, they always have their needles on. The street car goes slowly, stops often, the doors open, and each time your feet are chilled by the wind. I began to grow cold, here we are, says Gran, we failed to dress the boy warm enough, that’s my fault. Under the overcoat she is wearing a woolen jacket, she took her jacket off, I say no, it is a woman’s jacket. She laughed, look what we are having here, the little man is heard from, and put the jacket on me, wrapping it all round me, and then put my overcoat over it. “And I can do without, I have enough fat for warmth.” I at once grew warm. There were few people in the car, all of them were silent, Dad was standing in the end of the car looking out of the window.
He just wouldn’t switch to the warm winter clothes, he still thinks himself a boy, wearing that light coat of his in such a weather, says Gran, he is excited, they see each other so seldom. Your Dad is a good man, things will sort themselves out, you will have a long life to live.
And you?
My life was over even before the War, it is just one gray day that I am going through now. I will make it to the end somehow, only the pity for you, in times like this one has to hold on with one’s teeth, use one’s teeth…
That I didn’t understand, though teeth are useful, without them you cannot even chow salted fatback.
At last we arrived, on both sides there were small hillocks, the street-car stopped down in the long pit between them, we climbed the stairs leading to the top of one of the hillocks, and there was a tiny wooden ornamented house up there, and there was a little window in the wall of the house, in the window was a head of curly hair, it was the cashier, she asks where we are going, how many tickets…
Dad says two tickets for grown ups, and do we need to buy a ticket for the boy?
Does he go to school? Not yet? Then you don’t need to.
Dad gave me the tickets to hold, hold them tight, next year you are going to need a ticket too. Now we go to the terminal to wait for the train.
We entered the long wooden terminal, it is a platform, with no snow on it, there were several other people there, everybody was silent, only the vicious wind blowing, well, we wait. At last, from far away to the right came a low rumble, it was growing louder and louder, the whistle blew, a bright light is rapidly approaching us, though it is broad daylight now, it is the lantern of the electrical suburban train. The train is going by with a swish, I mean to say, what about picking us up… The cars are fleeing by, but slower and slower, I understood that the train was coming to a stop. Right before us hissed and gaped open a door, climb in quick! Dad pushed me in, we all boarded it, the door closed with the same snaky sound, it slid close, coming from inside the wall like the doors in our cupboard, Mom says it is a convenience, and we started on, there was one stop, then the second one, then Dad said – forward march! We ran to the door, just made it, bounced out onto the platform, and the train rushed away.
The electrical train runs here from recently, Dad says, there used to be a little steam locomotive, it draw little cars, it took it two hours to make this distance.
Not two, one hour, says Gran, she has trouble keeping up with us, but doesn’t complain. The electrical train is not much of an achievement, I loved those little cars, light breeze was blowing in our faces, we used to go to our summer house… and she started crying, she hasn’t cried for quite a time, but she is crying now…
Dad knitted his brows, that was in summer, Fanni Lvovna, and now it is winter, you can see for yourself. And you cannot stop the technology. I also remember everything the way it used to be, but what are we to do, sit weeping all day long? The old life is over… as well as our young years, it can’t be helped.
You are not an old man, says Gran, if only life were a bit better.
We went down the whole of the terminal, began to descend the broken stairs leading to the ground. Gran groans, where are the handrails, there used to be handrails here, from time immemorial, so that’s your technology for you, why break the handrails, what for? The Estonians won’t do it, it is all the Russian newcomers’ doings, they have come and are in no hurry to leave.
Fanni Lvovna, they have nowhere to go, their country is in ruins.
Wish they took to re-building their country, I do.
We were walking on, there were no streets, there was a field, and a walk trumped in the snow across it, I had some snow get into my boots, but it melted at once and became warm, we were walking quickly and in silence. Ahead of us there came in sight some little and shabby wooden houses, among them was one white two storied house made of stone, that one we entered. There was a counter, and a woman sitting and knitting something from red wool – your pass is good for going where, the seventh? Only till the dinner-time, our rules are strict. I know, I know, I need no pass, I am a doctor, and here are the relatives. The woman at once looked into her notes, you can go, no bacillus, my congratulations, doctor, but rules are rules, you must understand.
We went past the counter, through another door and found ourselves beyond the wall, it was encircling all the houses. Dad knew where to go, we walked quickly, Gran was puffing, but wouldn’t acknowledge it, only fell behind several steps. We entered the little house, there was a short passage, several doors, Dad knocked once at one door, two voices simultaneously answered – do come in, we came in.

  2. Interesting take on the argument. I’ve been calling for a cease-fire, as well, but your point about neglect is well-taken. Unfortunately, I think our society is a long way from creating careers that can accommodate families and the Mommy Wars are going to continue to be stuck in a volley of ‘my choice is better than yours’ arguments.

  4. Thanks for the recipe! I love banana bread and I can’t wait to give making it myself a try (with some help at least, ahem). Will report back when we’ve tried it!

  6. Many of the incidents you list obviously took place in the context of the war in Jerusalem in 1948 and 1967.It is easy to produce a random list like you have done.I could play the same game as you and list 18 blood libels spread by Christians against Jews in the Ottoman empire resulting in RIots and DEATHS, not just injuries, but I will not stoop to your level. The issue is the treatment of Jews and Chrstians as minorities in the Arab world. It is a lie to infer that Christians are treated badly in Israel — on the contrary. It is the country in the middle east where Chrstian numbers are increasing.

  7. Danny: It was an interview with Wilbon. There really wasn’t any real news in the press conference. Just why they chose Miami… it’s not about the money… Wade wanted to contend for another title… Bosh is going to miss Toronto… blah blah blah

  8. Thanks for sharing this, Denise. I think we all face those same struggles at some point in our business lives, and we have to remember to be easy on ourselves. I find being grateful for the struggles is a healthy approach for me. I nearly always learn something that makes me a stronger (and even more grateful) woman through the challenges I face. Granted at the time I may not see it that way, but the learning is there – I just have to choose to see it.Please keep sharing with us – we’re all in this journey together!

  9. I will post a video… Im pretty sure I can get it to 1.8-1.9… Cooled and stable… im also putting an extra layer of gorilla glass on it… This is by far thee best phone I can find on the market.. Overall… Power… Durability… Easily modified… It does run warm at times… I just put it in the fridge… Condensation has not been a problem. I cant break this thing… Pretty amazing…

  11. Ray,Too soon? Haha. On a serious note I watched last nights ga,es on NBA tv this morning. If you think Joel and Stu gush over Bynum throughout the game…. You should have heard the Mavs announcers. Every second of the game they were complaining about how Bynum was controlling the game. When someone missed a shot it’s because they saw Bynum in the corner of hierarchy eye… When someone couldn’t get a rebound… Even when Kobe made a shot it was because Andrew willed it into the hoop.

  12. Nice post. I learn something a lot more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content material from other writers and practice a bit something from their store. I

Milchpackungen drucken….??? Besorgte Grüsse, Gabi

  14. Mooser – it’s saxophone he plays. But you are right, now that I think of it. Gilad’s arguments read sometimes like notes with variations, the themes sometimes lost in jam. But they say music is better suited as the language of emotion. Sometimes pure harmony, sometimes cool and sometimes raw. Alas, combining shallow and deep can make for quite a jamble when it comes to words.

  15. I simply want to tell you that I am new to blogs and actually liked your web site. Most likely I’m going to bookmark your blog . You absolutely come with terrific posts. Many thanks for revealing your website page.

  16. What´s that? A beautiful Squares Blanket? If I had one of those, I could finally throw away the hideous fleece blanket my mom got me 8 years ago! And with winter coming along (we had our first snow here in The Netherlands today), it would be great for snuggling on the couch and making awesome blanket forts!

  17. Maybe we should let about 1000 elbonians immigrate to your dads farm and ruin it the way our immigration policy has with Toronto. To the best of my knowledge no one in my family was illegal. In fact as UEL types they built cities that all the modern immigrants get to move to. Then they get affirmative action jobs because, well, libs don’t care about the people who buit the country.???

  25. Of course I found your site as I was cruzing for solutions to my problem household of 11+ rescue cats- many of whom lately are thinking ‘ out of the box’ when it comes to where should I pee? I am about one drop of pee from the edge and going over. However after finding several wonderful and imformative sites I stumbled on yours and now I am smiling again (and giggling) because of course I thought I was the only poor sod on the planet to have had my toaster pee’ed in. I feel much better now. hee hee -I am having a breakdown.

  27. So Field, since there were people in the actual audience who took offense to Mac’s material, what was Obama’s camp supposed to say? «Ya’ll need to stop trippin, Bernie’s just keeping it real…» Guess I’m not understanding how a prez candidate’s appropriate response to an act that was heckled is «apologizing for all the sh— Black folks do».

  28. amusingly… (and this is off topic), but Life Magazine, that Time bought and discontinued would actually be a good idea to bring back if they made the publication slick and like a coffee table book… with lots of photos. people like stuff they can collect and put on coffee tables. though I don't want to give them any ideas that would help them. They really don't deserve it.

  30. Your hair looks amazing! I was just contemplating going back to ombre.. I tried it at home myself and had the same reaction. A fresh hair coloring really changes a mood.. I think I might take the plunge as well.. thank you for the inspiration :)p.s. so great to see you blogging as well. I always find myself looking for your posts from time to time.

  31. I’ll dance with you any day, Loretta. My congregation understands my love of the dance – my love of worship – the way I celebrate God as our trinitarian God – and some even dance along with me.

  32. I have to say good work Matt and i largely agree with you Kaz . In my view i see that the right side of the midfield straight through to the attacking aspects makes full use of Ramires’s ability as he is a tireless work horse he largely compensates for the short falls found in the team and having him operate in that position and adapting well in it makes it easy to quickly alternate in the team formations – thereby he does not abandon his defensive duties but is also allowed to explore more in his attacking options.Reply

  33. Take a look at Hitchen's pictures from his college days and more recent pictures (pre-cancer). Shocking just how much his looks degenerated. Drinking and smoking take their toll.

  34. I’m enjoying your blog. I think meeting and talking with strangers is such a great idea! It’s lead to so many interesting encounters for you. I wonder if you consider your experiment a success, or if you even consider it an experiment anymore? It seems like you’ve transcended the original purpose for your blog and now it’s become just another part of your every day life.

  35. This was a good idea in principle, but a bad launch of this conceptually complex (for most Apple customers, anyway) service may set its rate of adoption back a year or more.Maybe it happened because Apple doesn’t have web DNA, but Apple didn’t know (hideously complex) cell phones either, and they hit a home run out of the box. The launch was probably botched because Jobs had his mind on his health, not on product quality. As such, this may be a fair glimpse of a post-Jobs Apple.

  36. Hi Bev, gorgeous card, I loved this card when I saw it in the magazine. How can anyone not like any of your creations, they are all beautiful, it will be treasured forever. Have faith in yourself girl! lol!Hugs, Barbara xx

  37. If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  38. Robert Graves includes Herod Agrippa in his “Claudius the God” as a major character. Tiberius’s Pet, Caligula’s Teacher and Claudius’s friend. These people are remarkable. In this story he almost starts a revolt in the East stretching from Egypt to Mesopotamia, Lydia to Arabia but dies from gangrene in the amphitheatre. The Romans were very nearly overwhelmed by the various Jewish revolts and assaults stretching from Cyrencia to Cyprus and Jerusalem. Looking at it from further back the Romans and Jews really were contesting for supremacy.

  39. Wow me likeee that melon clutch, it's so fresh and… fruity. Those dresses and shoes (picture 1+2) are beautiful too, looks like they're inspired by the spring-summer ready-to-wear show by Chanel.

Merci !

  45. I am SO in. I used to be in a mother-daughter book club with a bunch of friends and their moms in elementary school and it was so great. I also crashed my mom's grown up book club regularly, but I've had less success with book clubs as I've gotten older. I keep starting mini, two person ones with cute boys only to have our relationship and thus the book club fall apart by the second book. Classics are great!

  48. One other issue is when you are in a circumstances where you do not possess a cosigner then you may really need to try to exhaust all of your federal funding options. You will discover many grants or loans and other scholarships or grants that will give you finances to aid with school expenses. Thank you for the post.

  50. I like how the leaves store under your table, that’s so practical and convenient. Also, I really love the saying that you used for the title of your video. I’d never heard it before, but I find it inspiring. I need to write that one down, it’s a keeper.

  51. I don’t know what the hell you mean by moderation. I thought I made myself clear. I fought against tyranny(sic) once and now even in my middle 80′s I will fight against it again to secure the bill of rights and the Constitution if nessasery (sic)

  54. Hey Benji,Your boyfriend is working on a deficit reduction package. When I first heard about it I thought it was a good thing he's now finally bowing to the Tea Party instead of some worthless dictator. However, it's becoming clear he's going to try to raise taxes on the "wealthy"and some piddly other crap. Will there be a hue and cry from Benji in the same way he goes after Paul Ryan?Betting not. Love conquers all.

  59. I agree with you Simona, my mother does that too. She’s happy about what I’m doing although she doesn’t really say it out loud but I’m just glad she is starting to take the same multivitamin for women as I’m using. Thank you

  60. excellent points altogether, you simply gained a logo new reader. What may you recommend about your put up that you simply made a few days ago? Any sure?

  62. Hey ZedoMax can you do a review on the Destroyer Rom for the Evo 4G? I’ve heard nothing but good things about it and was wondering why you never reviewed it. Thanks in advance and love your videos…

  63. “Out on a desert highway, he rides a Harley Davidson, his short dark hair blowin in the sun. .. ”Sometimes being undiscovered aint so dang bad. I mean, look what happened to Bob after he’d had his fill of too much attention.
