These Great « des Petits Maîtres Hollandais »
I love the Dutch for their little drawings, that are simple, natural… Skillfully done, but not showing off this skill. Sparse land. Rather messy life, hospitable inns, drinking, breeches undone…
I love old things with brotherly love, I animate them, I sympathize with them, but I cannot stand the white-tie-and-tails formality of some laid tables. I love trash, streaks, puddles, catering implements with some dried scrapes of food on them carelessly left lying about… and there must be some leftovers left over after the meal… So that a hungry cat could get in through the window, and lick the plate clean without hurry.

A Scree In Moonlight…
When I began to paint, my master, looking at the portrait \I was doing\, asked:
— This – what for is this?..
It was the cheek. I answered:
— It is also a scree in moonlight.
He nodded – “visual associations, they are the most important…”
